Yemeni Arabic — why specialist matters
Yemeni Arabic is not a variant of Modern Standard Arabic. It is a distinct group of dialects — Sana'ani, Ta'izzi-Adeni, Hadhrami, Tihami — with vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation that diverge significantly from the Arabic taught in textbooks or used on Al Jazeera. A Yemeni-speaking asylum applicant interviewed by a non-Yemeni interpreter will routinely understand only a portion of what they are asked, and the transcript will read as confused even when the client has answered as accurately as they can.
