English words with more than one meaning in this setting. Check before rendering.
| sectioned / section | Colloquial for detained under a section of the Mental Health Act. Render as the legal power (المادة), not as a part or portion (جزء / قسم). |
| discharge | Three meanings: leaving hospital, the tribunal ordering release, and bodily discharge. Confirm which before rendering. |
| leave | In this setting it means permission to leave the hospital (s.17), not leave from work. |
| order | Legal order of the tribunal or court, not a request or an instruction. |
| ward | The hospital unit, not a legal ward (child in care). |
| capacity | Legal mental capacity for a specific decision, not physical capacity or room. |
| insight | The patient's awareness of their illness and need for treatment. A word-for-word rendering such as بصيرة may be misheard as spiritual insight. |
| compliance | Taking prescribed treatment, not obeying instructions. Keep the neutral sense and avoid blame. |
| restriction / restricted | A Ministry of Justice restriction order, not a general limitation. |
| hospital order | Made by a criminal court (s.37), unlike civil detention under s.2 or s.3. |
| forensic patient | A patient sent to hospital by a criminal court. A neutral label, not an accusation. Render it neutrally. |
| reference | A referral of the case to the tribunal by the hospital managers or the Secretary of State. Not a character reference. |
| disorder / illness / condition / disability | Often used interchangeably in English, but they can describe different things (for example, brain tumour as disability, depression as illness, bipolar as condition). Keep the speaker's word; do not level them. |
| learning disability | In the UK this means an intellectual disability, not a learning difficulty such as dyslexia. |
| meds | Slang for medication. Render as the ordinary word for medication, not as a different drug. |
| "Black Dog" | A figure of speech for depression, associated with Winston Churchill. Render the meaning, not the animal. |
