Mental Health Tribunal hearings determine whether a patient detained under the Mental Health Act should continue to be detained or be discharged. For Arabic-speaking patients, accurate interpretation is essential to the patient's ability to participate in proceedings about their own liberty.

Specialist psychiatric vocabulary

Mental health interpretation requires fluency in vocabulary that does not appear in standard legal training:

• Diagnostic terminology — schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, psychosis, dissociation; rendered in dialect-appropriate register rather than clinical Arabic that the patient may not understand
• Symptoms and mental state examination — thought disorder, hallucinations, delusions, suicidal ideation, self-harm, agitation
• Treatment and medication — antipsychotics, mood stabilisers, depot injections, ECT, capacity, consent

Dialect specialism

I have prepared dedicated bilingual mental health glossaries for Iraqi, Yemeni, and Syrian dialect work. Each glossary balances clinical precision against the register the patient actually speaks — an MSA-only rendering of "auditory hallucinations" will mean little to a rural Iraqi or Yemeni patient.
