Family court matters involving Arabic-speaking parties are some of the most sensitive interpreting work in the legal system. The court is hearing evidence about safeguarding, parental capacity, cultural practice, and risk — and the interpreter is part of how the court hears the parties. The interpreter's competence and impartiality become part of the record.

FGM Protection Order proceedings

FGM Protection Orders are made under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 to protect a girl or woman at risk. Final hearings often involve respondents from communities where Yemeni, Sudanese, Syrian, or other Arabic dialects are the working language at home. Vocabulary in these proceedings is specialist:

• Anatomical and medical terminology covered in a dialect-appropriate register
• Cultural and religious terminology — safeguarding the precision of evidence about practice, belief, and community structure
• Court terminology — orders, undertakings, prohibitions, breach, contempt

How I prepare

Family court instructions receive the same preparation standard as Crown Court work: bilingual glossary review, conflict-of-interest declaration, dialect confirmation with the respondent at first encounter, and tight discipline on staying inside the interpreter's role.
